Councils Tighten Security After Far-right Protest

Several Melbourne councils will consider tightening security at meetings after far-right protesters stormed the Moreland City Council chambers with a coffin to hold a “funeral for Australia Day”.

After a group of protesters from the Patriot Blue group stormed Wednesday night’s Moreland Council meeting, neighbouring Yarra City Council will also undergo additional security assessments before its meeting next week.

Yarra councillor Stephen Jolly said the same group was expected to try and close down their next meeting, which will be held on Tuesday, and encouraged residents to go to a counterdemonstration on the steps of Richmond Town Hall to “show the world that locals reject the bullying tactics of the far right”.
